To use vertebrate animals in the laboratory or in the field requires approval from the university's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Approval is based on review of an animal use protocol and typically requires 3-4 weeks. All animal users must also submit a Risk Assessment to the office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and must take an online training course ("Working with the UF IACUC).

It would be a major violation of federal regulations to keep any vertebrate animal anywhere on campus for any length of time without IACUC approval.
